Double Ended Twist locks are the fundamental twist locks used to lock stacked shipping containers together vertically. There have been many adaptations to the original manual double ended twist lock. The fundamental operation has however remained the same. A lever is used to rotate the center section of the twist lock to lock the containers together.
Double ended twist locks are available in either Left hand or Right-hand configurations. The difference being that the orientation of the handle and the operation is opposite. Right-handed double ended twist locks are normally readily available. The lead time for left handed twist locks can be considerably longer as they may need to be ordered directly from the factory.

The standard double ended twist lock is a 3-position This stems from the operational requirements when these units are used for the loading and securing of containers on ships.
A general note that double ended twist locks are a rattle fit (±1.5mm tolerance) in all 3 directions (X, Y, Z). This is in line with the manufacturing tolerances allowed for corner castings and is in accordance to ISO 1161.
The user can install these units upside-down into the top corner castings of the bottom container. Once the next container has been landed, the twist locks can be locked.
The handles can be facing inwards, towards the containers or outwards, with the handles facing outwards.The many variations available in the market, however, it is recommended that they be bought in sets of 4 to ensure that the center plate thickness is equal on all 4 corners, once installed. You may notice that one some of the spear heads there is a hole. This hole allows for the use of security mechanisms that can be used to keep the twist lock in the locked position.
